The Pioneers
The Pioneers By: David McCullough https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Pioneers/David-McCullough/9781501168703
The #1 New York Times bestseller by Pulitzer Prize–winning historian David McCullough rediscovers an important chapter in the American story that’s “as resonant today as ever” (The Wall Street Journal)—the settling of the Northwest Territory by courageous pioneers who overcame incredible hardships to build a community based on ideals that would define our country.
- Personal Notes
The book mentions Amos Porter who was one of the very first settlers of Marietta, Ohio (first town in the Northwest Territory) who was my 4xGreat Grandfather. Other early 19th century New England arrivals in the area (Duck Creek, mentioned in the book) were ancestors and involved in the "Underground Railroad" moving escaped slaves north (they were 14 miles north of the Ohio River, which at that time was the border of Virginia/the south)
